What causes acne?

Acne, one of the most common skin conditions, is primarily caused by a combination of factors. The main culprits behind acne include excess oil production, clogged pores, bacterial growth, and inflammation. Hormonal fluctuations, often experienced during puberty or periods of stress, can trigger the sebaceous glands to go into overdrive, producing an abundance of oil. When these oils mix with dead skin cells, it can lead to clogged pores. This creates the perfect environment for bacteria to thrive, leading to inflammation and the formation of those pesky pimples. Understanding the cause of your acne is the secret to clear skin

Acne occurs when hair follicles (tiny openings in the skin where hair grows) get clogged with oil and dead skin cells (keratinocytes). Our skin has oil glands called sebaceous glands that produce oil to keep our skin hydrated and protected.

Sometimes, these oil glands can produce too much oil, and when combined with dead skin cells, it forms a plug that blocks the hair follicle.
This blockage creates a perfect environment for certain bacteria called Propionibacterium acnes to grow. These bacteria thrive in the clogged follicles and trigger an immune response by our body, inflaming blood vessels leading to redness. This inflammatory process exacerbates the development of acne lesions, causing redness, swelling, and discomfort.

As a result of this inflammation, the follicle wall swells up, and a small red bump called a "pimple" forms on the skin's surface. If the inflammation goes deeper into the skin, it can form larger, more painful bumps called nodules or cysts.


Several factors contribute to the development of acne, including hormone fluctuations, especially during puberty, which cause increased oil production and skin cell turnover. Other factors like certain medications, stress, diet, and even genetics can also play a role.

It's important to note that acne isn't caused by poor hygiene or eating oily foods. While keeping the skin clean and following a healthy diet can help prevent breakouts, acne is primarily a result of hormonal and genetic factors interacting with our skin's natural processes.

Don’t Trust labels that say they are non comedogenic or won’t clog pores

Do not ever put anything on your skin or your hair without checking the ingredients first, even if it says “Won’t Clog Pores” or “Non-Comedogenic” on the bottle. No government agency oversees this, so skincare companies can claim their products promote clear skin and still have pore-clogging ingredients in their formulas. Below is a list of ingredients to avoid in all of your products; skin care, acne care, makeup, clothing and hair. Take a look at your current set of products; from your shampoo to your laundry detergent and see if they contain any of these clogging ingredients. Be Aware

  • Natural oils can be some of the worst offenders, like cocoa butter and coconut oil which are found in many “organic” skin care lines.

  • Some prescription products like the cream form of Retin A have pore-clogging ingredients. Many over-the-counter acne medications contain them as well.

  • “Oil-free” products can be comedogenic.
